Securing our U.S. ports is a daunting challenge for several reasons. Tens of thousands of ships come in and out of our ports every year, carrying millions of cargo containers. Hundreds of thousands of people work in ports or, like truck drivers, must enter ports on business. Compounding that, these vast, sprawling facilities are generally close proximity to major metropolitan areas.
As a result, securing ships, containers, people, and facilities must be done in a way that does not impede the flow of commerce and people. The panel will examine these security challenges and the various technologies available, which can help secure ports while still allowing commerce and people to easily flow through.
